June 2, 1997 Meeting Minutes

The Spring Meeting of the Virginia Chapter of the Society of Research Administrators (VA-SRA) was called to order at approximately 1: 15 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 1997 in Chandler Hall, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Virginia by Bob E. Wolfson, Chapter President.

The Minutes of the December 9, 1996 meeting and Treasurer's Report, included in the meeting packet, were adopted as presented by Mary Schamber, Chapter Secretary/Treasurer. As of the completion of the December 1996 meeting, the Chapter had an accumulated balance of $2,540.14.

The suspension of the By-Laws for the election of officers was approved. The Nominating Committee, consisting of Jennifer Murphy, George Mason University; Mike Ludwick, The College of William & Mary; and Chuck Willis, Old Dominion University Research Foundation, presented the following slate of Officers:

  • President Jenny Bradley, Roanoke College
  • President-Elect Patricia Buennemeyer, James Madison University
  • Secretary/Treasurer Mary Schamber, Old Dominion University Research Foundation

The Committee called for any further nominations. There were none. The above slate of Officers were unanimously elected.

Jenny Bradley and Pat Buennemeyer were thanked for organizing the program and for hosting the meeting.

A lengthy discussion about membership and dues followed. Membership fees were set at $15 per year and will be for the period July 1 through June 30 of each year. Membership fees must be paid in order to attend Chapter meetings and activities.

Mr. Wolfson then called for other business and announcements.

Bobbe Nixon, University of Virginia, announced a Small Business Innovation Research Workshop to be held on September 24 and 25 at the Boar's Head Inn in Charlottesville. Members can contact Bobbe for further information on this opportunity to network with small businesses.

Mike Ludwick, The College of William & Mary, informed the membership of a new book entitled Guide to Protecting an Idea written by Ms. Joy Bryant of The Patent Agency. The book contains basic information about patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

Jenny Bradley, Roanoke College, expressed appreciation to former VA-SRA Presidents Bobbe Nixon, the University of Virginia, and Bob Wolfson, Old Dominion University Research Foundation, and presented them with engraved desk clocks. Kathy Reed, the University of Virginia, was also recognized as being one of the initial organizers of the Virginia Chapter.

Diana Vincelli announced that the University of Richmond is seeking a Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations and provided job description information.

The next Chapter meeting will be held at The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg in December. Janet Hahn issued an invitation to host the June 1998 meeting at Radford University.

A discussion was held on the use of Chapter funds to send two or three members to a Regional or National SRA meeting. The membership approved the institution of this fellowship award. Kathy Reed, University of Virginia, will draft a policy and application form, and the Executive Committee will select recipients of the award.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:55 p.m.
