December 10, 2001 Meeting Minutes

The Fall Meeting of the Virginia Chapter of the Society of Research Administrators was held at Virginia Commonwealth University, December 10, 2001.

The Meeting began with a series of informative roundtable discussions over breakfast. After a welcome by President Janet Hahn a presentation on Cost Sharing was given by Chuck Chermside and Margie Booker of VCU. Following that an overview of Federal Grant Administration was given by Ted Roumel, Assistant Director, Office of Technology Transfer, National Institutes of Health.

Janet Hahn opened the Business Meeting of the VA-SRA indicating Pat Buennemeyer of James Madison is doing a review of the current VA-SRA By-Laws. In accordance with the current By-Laws, the Nominating Committee sends out the slate of nominees 45 days in advance to the membership for consideration. It was agreed that pending final modification of the By-Laws the slate this time will be posted on the List Serv for members to review.

Peggy Candler, UVa, has resigned as Secretary to the VA-SRA for personal reasons. Membership voted on and approved Beth Fogarty, Christopher Newport University, to serve in the post the remainder of the year.

Ginger Allen, Virginia Tech, has also had to resign as President-Elect as Ginger has taken another position outside of Research Administration. A motion was made and carried that Betty Browder will now hold the office of President-Elect.

Janet Hahn then presented Anne Womack of William and Mary a beautiful marble vase in gratitude and recognition of Anne's service as President last year.

Anne Womack asked the membership to send suggestions for nominations to the Nominating Committee for the coming year. The Office of Treasurer, unlike other posts, is a two-year position, and reminded us that officers would need to be members of the National organization. There are two other posts, not currently officer positions, the List Serv Manager, currently Kobby Hoffman, and our Website Coordinator, Mike Ludwick. If anyone would like to take over these duties, please let Anne Womack and the Nominating Committee know.

Treasurer's Report

Billie Martin-Lowry presented and the membership approved the report. Current balance is $10,292 before expenditures and costs of this December meeting. Billie handed out new Membership Directories, which Beth Fogarty will now take over updating and publishing for next year.

Minutes of Spring 2001 meeting were reviewed and approved.

New Business

Location of the Spring 2002 meeting was discussed and an offer by Sherry Baldwin of Norfolk State was made for early June. William and Mary has volunteered its location for the following December 2002 meeting. Members are also reminded to consider off-campus site for the meeting.

Members were reminded to apply for VA-SRA Fellowship to the Sectional meeting, this year to be held in Destin, FL. The fellowship will pay the registration fee if awarded. Applications can be found at VA-SRA.org under "Historical/Official Info" and sent to Janet Hahn, President, VA-SRA.

It was recognized that Sherry Baldwin, Norfolk State, has received her CRA designation this year and Chuck Chermside recommended offering a review session possibly the day before or after our scheduled Spring meeting. The CRA test takes place in the Fall. Send an email to hcherm@vcu.edu if you are interested in this review session. Cost of the review is $185/per person.

All new and old business completed, meeting was adjourned.
